VW GOLF MK1 1976-1983 was impressive in so many ways. The car replaced the VW Beetle, the model introduced in 1930s. GOLF MK1 was a completely new type of car the hot hatch.
The car was powered by a 110bhp, 1600cc engine. Drivers could easily handled sports car performance with this model. Slight go-faster stripes, alloy wheels and a rear spoiler fitted to the Guigiaro-designed body shell were some of the best features of Volkswagen GOLF MK1 1976-1983.
Later versions designed on GTi theme could develop the performance and handling. But the original Golf had created a place for itself.
This small car had taken performance and realism firmly together. Initially the car had a simple 110bhp engine. But later in 1976 there was a technical revolution by specially designed intake and outlet manifolds. Fuel injection in the car ensured that each one of those 110 horses was in power when the owner was not driving the car on full throttle ensuring that the little Dub could return a barely believable 30mpg. And that was 30mpg in a car, which could cover the 0-60 dash in 9.6 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 111mph.
The car was designed in such a way that the buyer would feel, the car has not been designed by manufacturers but by car enthusiasts. This is interesting to know that the first Gti had started life as favorite project of the Wolfsburg engineers.
Each and every element of the car had an engineering purpose behind it. The plastic arches were added to protect the wings from stone chips not to differentiate the car from base models and magnetize a price premium. Even the hard-line front spoilers role was to apply some welcome down force to the front of the car as speed increased but not to scare the road users.
